A reader asked me about this recipe (Hi, Susan!) so I figured I would throw it up here today since it is so easy to make.
We call these Monkey Balls. I personally think this was the original name – it’s what everyone that I knew called it, but apparently someone thought that was inappropriate. Which it kinda is, but I think it’s funny (I also like fart jokes). We only have it once a year because that was my husband’s childhood tradition (my chubetto family ate them whenever we felt like it). I pre-make the balls and throw them in a bundt pan on Christmas Eve so that they’re ready to be baked on Christmas morning. This is what we eat to tide us over until lunchtime (we have our big Christmas meal around 1:00) and it is FABULOUS!
Monkey Bread
If pre-making these just do the first step. Cover and refrigerate. Do the second step when you're ready to bake and serve.

: Bakery Type Treat?
Ingredients
- 4 (8-ounce) tubes refrigerated buttermilk biscuits (the cheaper the better)
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 cups sugar, divided
- 1 cup butter or margarine
- 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
Instructions
- Cut each biscuit into quarters. Combine 1 cup of the sugar with the cinnamon in a large plastic bag. Drop biscuit quarters into bag and shake to thoroughly coat. Place biscuit quarters into a greased bundt pan.
- Combine butter/margarine with remaining 1 cup sugar, brown sugar and water in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil. Pour over biscuits in bundt pan. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Carefully invert bundt pan onto platter.
Yum!!!!
My husband’s family made this and they called it Monkey Bread. They are also very stuffy and do not discuss bodily functions heaven forbid. My family is the opposite and love a good fart joke too. I tasted this store bought (frozen) and loved it. It would have to be make and take or my blood sugar would be sky high.
I can only eat two “balls” (hee!) when we have it because it would make me sick if I ate more. But man, those two balls are so worth it! And thanks for the info regarding the store bought – I wondered if it was any good and now I know!
Don’t know if YOU will like the store bought. When it comes to sugar-my crack-almost ANYTHING sweet and gooey will due. I never had my in-laws homemade I only heard about it. I never tasted the homemade stuff it might be much better.
Monkey bread is the best and I made it for my family when you first posted this on your blog years ago. My entire chubette family thanks you!
That is so cool. And I love me some chubetto food (in moderation, of course, NOT)!
I prefer Monkey Balls, as would *most* of my family. We have one kid who grew up weird, married a (really nice) girl who is also weird. They were both shocked and offended when we invited a big crowd of family and friends over to have Spaghetti and Elk Balls.
Offended because everyone laughed and kept calling them elk balls.
OHMYGAWD – Now I have a new name for meatballs. Thanks!
I made this for the first time this past Christmas and loved them! I think I found a new family tradition.
It’s a great tradition to have! 🙂
Christmas tradition at our house too and we call it Monkey Bread. I use Grands biscuits, so good!
